Why mess with what works? Or at the very least, make the "improvements" optional. They aren't meant to be a notepad, so that's nearly irrelevant. Grand that they can be formatted using all the usual keyboard shortcuts. Moreover, the changed font makes them visually less distinctive. These gigantic blobs are entirely unsatisfactory. This amounts to a chorus, to which I add my voice.
